Do you love the British? Does Ricky Gervais' The Office make you yearn for your very own nowhere career in the British paper industry? Before you pick up and move to Manchester, head out on holiday to see the best of the British!
London, Baby!
In my heart of hearts, the world revolves around London. From Heathrow to Leicester Square, the city reflects the main facets of our love of everything British. You can find anything and everything in London, so it's a great travel city. Your visit can be tailored to your specific interests, whether that includes Renaissance paintings or a love of salt and pepper shakers.
The Tube is one of the most modern transportation systems in the entire world, making sightseeing and after-hours partying accessible and safe. Be sure to pick up Tube merchandise for your family and friends. After all, who doesn't love the phrase 'Mind the Gap'?
Books, Theatre and Culture
If you're a fan of print media, theatre or visual arts, the United Kingdom is a hot spot. From Shakespearean plays performed at the newly renovated Globe Theatre to the wide collection of museums covering everything from modern art to 17th century portraits, you'll find a literary, theatrical and cultural escape in Britain.
Be sure to catch a show while in London. Les Misérables might not be about the British, but they do a great job bringing it to life! The UK is also home to the boy wizard's (Harry Potter) creator, J.K. Rowling.
Outdoor Escapes
England's Lake District, located in the northeastern part of the island, is a lovely outdoor escape. Featuring lakes and mountains called fells, the outdoorsman or outdoorswoman can get their fix of British beauty. Even if you're not into the great outdoors, lunch at a panoramic pub would be a great way to mix the extreme beauty of your surroundings with something a little more urban.
Head up to Scotland to find such gems as Loch Ness and go on a hunt for the infamous Nessie. The Scottish Highlands are famous throughout the world for their expansive beauty.
The Seaside Resort
Being part of an island gives you one thing landlocked countries can't enjoy: the ocean. Synonymous with the UK is the seaside resort town, Bath. In Jane Austen's time, one would head to Bath to experience the refreshing hot springs and the healthy air.
These days if you want to experience seaside resort living in the United Kingdom, head to Brighton. It's been referred to as London-by-the-sea, so stagnation isn't an option. Plenty of restaurants, hotels and entertainment options exist. That is, if you don't want to spend all your time on the pebble beach!
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
Be sure to visit the other constituent countries that make up the UK. Part of the spirit of the Brits comes from these distinct and interesting cultures. If you like the accent found in London, you'll adore the listening to the Scots speak! The first time I travelled to Edinburgh, I was convinced that they were not speaking English. After a while, I became used to the local dialogue and got the locals to teach me to properly pronounce Edinburgh!
Visit Wales' largest city, Cardiff, to experience how the English and Welsh are living together. From Welsh-medium schools to bilingual signs, every good Canadian can respect an interest in bilingual roots.
Northern Ireland might have gotten a bad reputation with all the political and religious upheaval in the area, but since the Good Friday Agreement, things have started to turn around. Visit Belfast to experience the beauty of Northern Ireland. While you're in the area head into Ireland proper.
She Shoots, She Scores!
The Brits are serious about their sports. Soccer, called football out there, brings out the crowds; however, rugby and cricket are also quite popular. Get into the spirit of UK sports by catching a game live and singing on the Tube with fans after a win (or loss). If you're not able to join the action in the stadium or on the pitch, find a local pub and settle in with a pint or two.
Royalty and All That Jazz
No matter if you love them or hate them and wonder why Princes Harry and William don't get real jobs like the rest of us, royalty is intrinsically connected to the British spirit. Visit the castles and royal residences to perhaps catch a peak of a navy blue sedan with tinted windows. Who knows who might be in that car!
Exploring the UK
The best of the UK and that British spirit can be found from one coast to the other. Despite the exchange rate, aficionados know that it's better to be broke in Britain than rich anywhere else in the world.
